Abuja played host to an electrifying marathon race at the ongoing 2024 African Military Games (AMGA) on Saturday, November 23, where the Tanzania Armed Forces team showcased their prowess, claiming gold medals in the men’s and women’s categories.
The men’s race saw Alphonce Simbu of Tanzania take the top spot with an impressive time of 2:17:19, while his compatriot Magdalena Crispin Shauri secured victory in the women’s category, crossing the finish line in 2:36:29.
General Christopher Gwabin Musa, Nigeria’s Chief of Defence Staff, congratulated the Tanzanian team for their exceptional performance.
Speaking at the event, he said:
“Tanzania’s victory in both categories of the marathon race is a testament to their discipline, endurance, and dedication. Their performance is an inspiration to all participating nations.”
General Musa also commended all the athletes for their participation, emphasizing the spirit of camaraderie and sportsmanship that defines the Africa Military Games.
The marathon race, one of the most anticipated events of AMGA 2024, began promptly at 6:00 a.m. at the iconic City Gate in Abuja.
The 40-kilometer route spanned key parts of the capital, offering scenic views and challenging terrains for the athletes.
Twenty-five (25) African countries, including the host nation Nigeria, competed in the race. Spectators lined the streets to cheer on the runners.
Tanzania’s triumph in both categories did not come as a surprise, given their historical strength in long-distance running.
Their performance at AMGA 2024 adds another feather to their cap in the ongoing games.
